Kimi Antonelli Heads to São Paulo as Formula 1’s Youngest World Champion

Kimi Antonelli enters the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix as Formula 1’s youngest world champion, having secured the drivers’ title with third place in Mexico City on 1 November.

Formula 1’s official race report confirmed the Mercedes driver’s championship success behind race winner Max Verstappen and runner-up Lewis Hamilton. The result means Antonelli arrives in Brazil with the season’s principal individual prize already decided.

Mexico podium delivers championship breakthrough

Third place was enough to put the title beyond his rivals’ reach. Mercedes-Benz’s account of the race also described Antonelli recovering a podium position by passing Charles Leclerc after a restart.

The significance of that finish extends beyond a single Grand Prix result. Securing the title before the final rounds gives Antonelli a different competitive situation: he can pursue further results without needing to protect an unresolved championship lead.

A title secured through a disrupted race

Formula 1’s race account records that Antonelli started fourth and entered Mexico needing only ninth place to guarantee the title, regardless of his rivals’ results. A red flag after Valtteri Bottas’ accident and a later Safety Car following Arvid Lindblad’s crash interrupted the race, but Antonelli completed the required finish with room to spare.

The championship’s official reaction report puts the 20-year-old on 380 points after 19 rounds. On the podium, he thanked Mercedes and his family and described the significance of sharing the occasion with Verstappen and Hamilton. His comments conveyed relief at completing the task after a tense weekend.

Nine wins provide the foundation

Formula 1’s Brazil preview credits Antonelli with nine victories during his championship campaign. The sequence of wins supplied the points that made the Mexico podium decisive.

A championship is settled by the season’s accumulated results, rather than the finishing position at one race in isolation. Mexico supplied the confirmation; the work that established his advantage stretched across the campaign.

Team objective remains in Brazil

Antonelli’s next assignment is the São Paulo weekend on 6–8 November. Mercedes still have the constructors’ championship to secure, giving his results alongside team-mate George Russell continuing importance.

The distinction keeps the remaining races competitive for the newly crowned champion. Individual race victories remain available, while the team has a separate title objective that depends on both cars.

New champion, unfinished season

Interlagos will mark Antonelli’s first Grand Prix weekend since clinching the crown. He arrives with a historic achievement confirmed, but with further opportunities to add to his winning record and contribute to Mercedes’ campaign.
