Mercedes Seek Constructors’ Championship at São Paulo After Antonelli’s Drivers’ Crown

Mercedes arrive at the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix with an opportunity to add the constructors’ championship to Kimi Antonelli’s newly secured drivers’ title.

Formula 1’s official Brazil preview confirms that the team can settle the constructors’ contest at Interlagos. Antonelli’s third place in Mexico City has already decided the drivers’ crown, leaving the collective championship as the main remaining title objective for the team.

Three-point swing would settle the title

Formula 1’s published championship permutations put Mercedes on 630 points and Ferrari on 504 before Brazil, a gap of 126. With 129 points available after Interlagos, Mercedes can settle the contest by outscoring Ferrari by at least three points this weekend. A subsequent points tie would favour Mercedes on race-win countback.

That calculation creates several possible routes to the crown. If Ferrari score nothing, an eighth-place finish for either Mercedes driver is sufficient. A Ferrari one-two, by contrast, ensures the championship remains open beyond Brazil. Mercedes can also clinch without winning the Grand Prix, provided their combined points meet the required swing.

Team result becomes the central target

The constructors’ championship combines the points scored by both cars. Mercedes therefore need to consider the contribution of George Russell alongside Antonelli as they approach the Brazilian weekend.

That makes a strong overall finish valuable even if another team takes the race victory. Winning the Grand Prix and securing the championship are related ambitions, but they are separate outcomes governed by the finishing order and points.

Rivals still pose a race-winning threat

Formula 1’s preview highlighted Red Bull and Ferrari as potential challengers for victory following their performances in Mexico. Max Verstappen won that race, with Lewis Hamilton second and Antonelli third, according to the championship’s official race report.

Those results are a reminder that Mercedes’ title opportunity does not make the São Paulo race a foregone conclusion. Qualifying, race pace and reliable execution will still shape the points available to each team.

Interlagos weekend runs from 6–8 November

The event uses the standard format of three practice sessions followed by qualifying and the Grand Prix. The published timetable lists the race for 14:00 in São Paulo on Sunday 8 November, equivalent to 1:00am in Malaysia on Monday 9 November.

If the championship remains unresolved, the next opportunity is Las Vegas, followed by Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The size of the current lead makes Brazil a genuine chance to finish the job, while Ferrari’s result will determine whether the remaining rounds still carry title stakes.

For Mercedes, the weekend offers the chance to complete a championship double. The drivers’ title is already secured; the constructors’ outcome remains dependent on the results in Brazil.
