Matt Robertson Claims Record $1.25 Million Prize at Inaugural The Champions Tournament
Matt Robertson has won the inaugural The Champions tournament, collecting a US$1.25 million first prize after bringing five fish weighing 20 pounds, 2 ounces to the final-day weigh-in on 31 October 2026.
World Bass Enterprises, the event organiser, described the payout as the largest awarded to a winner in bass tournament fishing. The Kentucky angler’s victory came in a 62-angler event on Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland River in Tennessee, with a total prize fund of US$3.25 million.
Final-day catch seals landmark victory
Robertson’s championship-round catch completed a strong tournament rather than a sudden one-day turnaround. Major League Fishing’s coverage reported that he had already set the pace with a 20-pound opening-day bag and led the qualifying weights before returning with another substantial catch in the final.
In a five-fish format, the decisive figure is the combined weight of the permitted catch. Consistency across the tournament put Robertson in contention; producing the required weight again on the last day secured the result.
Smallmouth approach on the Cumberland River
Water Wire’s account of the winning pattern described Robertson targeting smallmouth bass in moving water below Old Hickory Dam. He worked a swimbait around rocky structure, building his approach around the river’s current.
The pattern illustrates a familiar tournament challenge: locating productive water is only part of the job. An angler must also choose a presentation that continues to produce eligible fish when the result is on the line.
Final weights show a clear winning margin
The organiser’s final standings list South with four fish totalling 13 pounds, 7 ounces, leaving Robertson 6 pounds, 11 ounces ahead. Strader’s five-fish bag weighed 11 pounds, 2 ounces, just two ounces more than McKinney’s fourth-place catch.
Those totals refer to Championship Saturday alone. The earlier rounds determined who reached the 15-angler final, while the final-day weights decided the title. Robertson therefore had to deliver again after qualifying rather than rely on his earlier advantage.
Major payouts across the leading places
According to the organiser’s results announcement, Pake South finished second and received US$500,000, while Wesley Strader earned US$300,000 in third. Major League Fishing also reported a US$200,000 award for fourth-placed Trey McKinney.
For Robertson, the combination of the first title and the record prize makes the inaugural edition a defining result. For the event, the final standings establish its first champion and the benchmark future fields will chase.
