Fenerbahçe Fight Back Twice to Beat Liverpool 3–2 as Muriqi Heads Winner

Fenerbahçe ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Champions League league phase with a 3–2 comeback victory in Istanbul on 4 November, overturning two separate deficits before Vedat Muriqi scored the winner.

UEFA’s official results confirm the score, while Opta Analyst’s match account identified substitute Muriqi’s 79th-minute header as the decisive moment. It gave Fenerbahçe their first victory of this league-phase campaign.

Nyoni’s opener cancelled out within four minutes

Liverpool’s official match report lists Trey Nyoni as the opening scorer in the 25th minute, with Mason Greenwood bringing Fenerbahçe level in the 29th. That rapid response ensured the hosts reached half-time at 1–1 after falling behind for the first time.

The visitors’ second lead came after changes from the bench. Liverpool’s account describes Cody Gakpo supplying the cross that substitute Isak headed in, while Brown’s equaliser came from N’Golo Kanté’s delivery following a short corner. Muriqi then settled the match with his header, completing a second home recovery in the space of ten minutes.

Liverpool unable to protect second lead

The visitors had won their opening three European fixtures, but their fourth match exposed the cost of allowing an opponent back into the contest. Alexander Isak put Liverpool 2–1 ahead in the 69th minute before the home side responded again.

Live coverage by The Guardian recorded Archie Brown’s equaliser in the 73rd minute. Six minutes later, Brown supplied the cross for Muriqi to head Fenerbahçe in front, turning the final stages decisively towards the hosts.

Defensive record adds context

Opta reported that Liverpool had conceded three goals in each of their last three Champions League matches. They had still beaten LASK and Villarreal, but another three-goal concession in Istanbul ended in defeat.

That sequence explains why the result raises questions beyond the loss of an unbeaten record. Scoring enough to win had covered the earlier defensive concessions; this time Liverpool’s two goals were insufficient.

Next European fixtures offer different challenges

UEFA’s fixture list sends Liverpool to Club Brugge on 25 November. Fenerbahçe are also away that day, against Shakhtar Donetsk.

For the Turkish side, the comeback supplies a first league-phase win and a platform for the remaining fixtures. Liverpool must respond after a strong opening sequence was interrupted by a match they twice led.

The final margin was only one goal, but the two recoveries and late winner made the difference: Fenerbahçe took the points, while Liverpool left Istanbul with their first European defeat of the campaign.
