Black Drum Fishing Guide: Habitat, Bait and Responsible Handling
Black drum (Pogonias cromis) are powerful coastal fish found in the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Anglers often identify them by the barbels beneath the lower jaw and their ability to produce drumming sounds.
Where and how to fish
Black drum commonly feed near the bottom, taking crustaceans and mollusks. Shrimp and crab are widely used natural baits. Rod strength, line and terminal tackle should match local conditions and the size of fish likely to be encountered.
Handle large fish carefully
Use appropriate landing equipment and avoid suspending heavy fish vertically by the jaw. Follow local size, bag and seasonal limits, which vary by jurisdiction. When releasing a fish, minimize time out of the water.
