What Are McLaren’s Papaya Rules in Formula 1?

McLaren’s Papaya Rules are the team’s approach to managing on-track competition between its Formula 1 drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The broad principle is to give both drivers opportunities to race while protecting the team’s overall result and avoiding unnecessary collisions.

In January 2026, team principal Andrea Stella said McLaren intended to continue treating the drivers fairly and offering equal opportunities. The approach does not mean teammates are prohibited from overtaking each other; rather, it sets expectations around safe and respectful competition.

The rules came under renewed attention at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix weekend, when Norris and Piastri collided during the Sprint. Both drivers spun, and Piastri retired. Stewards determined no further action was necessary.

The incident illustrates the tension between allowing close competition and protecting a team’s points. This article explains the policy; it should not be confused with a claim that Norris is currently chasing Max Verstappen for the championship.
